Inmobiliaria Minaya Y Willmore S.R.L. (IMW) was incorporated in 1977 by its principals who are direct descendents of the original freed North American slaves brought to the Dominican Republic in 1824. For over twenty years, IMW has explored various options for developing a portion of its Samana, DR landholdings. This exploration led to an introduction to the concept of building the first United States sponsored, Caribbean-based, higher education Study Abroad Training Center: Samana College.

After conferring with representatives of numerous Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSIs) and United States Government and Non-Government Organizations (NGOs), the decision was made to pursue this initiative.
