Born December 13th, 1924, Lawrence "Larry" Eugene Doby was the first black player in the American League. He joined the Cleveland Indians in July of 1947, three months after Jackie Robinson entered the Majors with the National League's Brooklyn Dodgers. Mr. Doby was an all-star centerfielder from 1949-55, managed the Chicago White Sox in 1978, becoming the second black major league manager and was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1998.
